The Lochinvar Estate has a genuine history as an “Out of Africa” colonial cattle ranch and farm. Bequeathed to the nation in 1904, the old colonial farmhouse still stands, under a preservation order but Lochinvar’s huge swath of unique wetland and floodplain savannah was returned to its natural state. Today it is a World Heritage Wetland Site, situated on the Kafue River floodplain midway between Livingstone and Lusaka. It is here that the exotic and beautiful Lechwe Plains Tented Camp is nestled and can be best described as an African fantasy under canvas. The tented lodge sits under a mature grove of acacia trees on the edge of the wide Chunga Lagoon. Six double tents cater for a maximum of 12 guests, making this a tranquil hideaway. Each tents boasts an ensuite bathroom, mosquito nets and private game viewing decks. Guests have the undivided attention of the hosts and staff, including a knowledgeable ornithologist and guide. They can also enjoy an evening around the camp fire. A wide range of cuisine is served blending local ingredients with international flavours and is usually served alfresco. The Park is now the last stronghold of the Kafue lechwe, an aquatic antelope of extraordinary grace, and is also home to a variety of wildlife such as wildebeest, zebra, hippo, side-striped jackal and over 400 bird species. Lechwe Plains Tented Camp offers game drives in open 4x4 safari vehicles as well as mokoro (dugout canoe) excursions and walking safaris. A highlight for guests are the cultural visits to nearby traditional fishing villages, the invigorating hot springs and excursions to iron-age archaeological sites.
