Shaded under massive African Ebony trees in the extensive Kwando wilderness, is Kwando Lagoon Camp. The camp comprises of 6 spacious, luxury tents with views over the private lagoon formed by the ever-changing Kwando River. Each tent consists of a bedroom area with an en suite bathroom and exotic, outdoor shower. The tents are furnished in stunning teak furniture designed and created by master craftsmen and the interiors are kept cool by a canvas flysheet under shade cloth. A small plunge pool is available to cool off during the long summer days and resident hippos entertain guests as they relax on the private decks in front of their tents.
In the dry season Lagoon offers a fauna experience unmatched in Africa, with sightings of up to 1 000 elephant in a single game drive. Lion prides regularly hunt elephant in this remote region, a habit undocumented elsewhere in Africa. Herds of up to 2 000 buffalo also attract the attention of lion and hyena, and our trained guides scan the horizons for dust storms, generated by thousands of buffalo hooves. Night drives present a drama of epic proportions when buffalo move through the parched floodplains, and packs of wild dogs provide excitement for many months when they have pups, motivating them to undertake exhilarating hunts twice a day.
The camp’s unique, purpose-designed double-decker barge with jet engine is designed to navigate the shallows and ox bows of the Kwando River all year round. The strong current in the river enables the barge to float silently down the river so guests can experience the peace and quiet of this remote wilderness. Kwando Lagoon is peaceful and wonderful in summer, savage and magnificent in winter.
