The north-eastern area of Unguja – one of the two main islands of Zanzibar – is known as Matemwe. Here, in harmony with the environment and in cooperation with the local people, is Matemwe Bungalows, built to offer a perfect mix of relaxation and excitement.
Enjoy the contrasting colours of the Indian Ocean, the fine powder sand of the beach, the extreme beauty of the coral reef and the wild bush vegetation. Meet the friendly villagers, visit the local fish market and explore the ocean reefs on your doorstep.
Matemwe Bungalows has 14 en suite bungalows built from local materials. All the rooms and the restaurant overlook the azure Indian Ocean. The eight self-contained rooms and six suites have solar-powered lighting and hot water. All rooms have private verandas where one can laze in a hammock. Seafood is the speciality of the house, with all produce bought daily from the local markets. Dinner offers a choice of delicious meat, fish and vegetarian main courses. In the evening, the full moon rising out of the sea is a wonderful romantic experience that you’re not likely to forget. There are internet and telephone/fax facilities in the main building.
At low tide, explore the lagoon by walking along the inter-tidal pathway or discover the coastline from your kayak. Visit the local village or enjoy a bike trip on the endless stretch of palm-fringed beach. Once the tide comes in you can go sailing with the local fishermen in their ngalawas.
