Quilálea is a luxurious private island resort that lies 55 kilometres north of Pemba city and 12 kilometres from the mainland town of Quisanga. It is in a marine sanctuary in Mozambique’s Quirimbas archipelago, a 500,000 hectare reserve area endorsed by the WWF. The sanctuary is a nursing area for nesting green and hawk beak turtles and humpback whales sheltering their young before migrating south between the months of July to November.
Accommodation consists of spacious, coral rock villas with palm tree thatched roofs and a large private teak veranda with panoramic sea views. The villas each have twin vanities, showers opening to the sea and furniture crafted from indigenous teak and mahogany by local carpenters. The resort’s restaurant offers guests beautiful ocean views while revelling in the flavors and spices of Mozambican cuisine. Guests will savour a healthy diet of freshly caught fish, crustacean, vegetables and fruit from the mainland, all prepared by Quilalea’s two executive chefs.
Introductory dives are available for beginners on the house reef off the beach plus a wide selection of PADI certifications for all levels of divers. There is an abundance of marine life in the surrounding waters including turtles, dolphins, Potato Groupers, Moray eels and large Pelagics to name a few. The lodge also supply's snorkeling equipment at no extra charge. Sailing yachts and dhow cruises are available for charter use by guests, and fishing, bird watching, and excursions to neighbouring islands are easily arranged. Alternatively, if guests feel like taking it easy, a Karma Salaama massage will do the trick. Described as ‘the best massage bed in the world’, the shelter is built into the natural rock and above the beach with high tide water lapping one to relaxation.
