  • Wide range of activities including fishing, water sports and a luxury spa
  • Boat trips to the exotic bird islands or visits to Ruma National Park
  • Home to the famous Proconsul Heseloni archaeological site

With Lake Victoria's calm waters gently lapping the shores, Rusinga Island Lodge is truly a place to calm the mind and rejuvenate the body. The manicured, velvet lawns stretch to the water's edge and the grounds, with its exotic trees, are a haven for a myriad of bird species - many of which are unique to this area of Kenya.

Accommodation is in 7 enchanting en suite cottages, each with a private veranda overlooking the lake. The Lodge’s food is exquisite, and all breads, pastries and cakes are homemade. The speciality is fish dishes - whole grilled over coals, smoked or Zanzibar-style with coconut, lime and coriander, to name a few favourites. Breakfast and lunch are served under sweeping fig trees in the garden whilst dinners are taken either in the dining area, by the floodlit pool or on the jetty, where breathtaking sunsets over the lake can be enjoyed.

The lodge offers a wide range of exciting activities to meet each guest’s unique needs. Boat Trips to Bird Islands can be arranged where thousands of water birds roost and giant monitor lizards and spotted-necked otters can be seen on the rocks surrounding the islands. Guests may also choose to visit Ruma National Park, one of Kenya's most unusual and beautiful parks. Alternatively, exploring the lodge's newly opened Spa offers a range of luxurious treatments, whilst on the lake guests may enjoy invigorating water sports such as waterskiing and 'donuting'.

For the keen fisherman, the shallow waters of Lake Victoria are home to legendary Nile Perch growing up to 500lbs and even the most reluctant fisherman can reap gratification casting off the jetty for abundant Tilapia. Of course, the lodge’s chef will be more than happy to cook your catch for you. A short walk behind the lodge brings guests to the fascinating archaeological site where Mary Leakey found Proconsul Heseloni in 1948 - the last common ancestor of the great apes and man.
