The Lodge is nestled in the western foothills of the Chyulu range, overlooking Mt Kilimanjaro, with quintessential Africa in the foreground – flat top acacia trees and golden savannah. The lodge consists of eight cottages, each one defined by its owncharacter, comfort andprivacy. The architecture is unique and the cottages are constructed using only local materials. All cottages have a veranda with panoramic views of the plains and Mt Kilimanjaro, an ensuite bathroom, solar powered lighting (as is the hot water of the showers), with wood burning stoves as a back up for gray days. Two of the cottages have an additional bedroom for guests travelling with children. The Big Five can be found in the lodge surrounds – although the rhino can be difficult to see as they live in very dense cover. There is a resident herd of bull elephant that live around the Lodge, with larger herds passing through the area twice a year. Guests staying at Ol Donyo Wuas have access to over 300,000 acres of uninterrupted wilderness, the only fence being the one that surrounds the lodge to keep the wildlife out.Activities include twice-daily game drives in open 4x4 safari vehicles, horse riding on the open plains or through the forests, walking and hiking and, for those who want to unwind, lying by the swimming pool to watch a never-ending stream of wildlife visitingthe waterhole below.
