ABERDARE NATIONAL PARK, KENYA
Aberdare National Park was created in 1950 to protect the forested slopes and moors of the Aberdare Mountains. The Park was named by the explorer Thomson, who named the Park after Lord Aberdare, then president of the Royal Geographical Society. An Aberdare safari offers a game-rich experience and exceptional accommodation.
ABOUT ABERDARE NATIONAL PARK
Aberdare National Park
In the north of Aberdare National Park is Ol Doinyo Satima – at 3 995 metres/ 13,107 feet, the highest peak in the Park, and to the south, Kinangop. Between the two is moorland with rocky ridges, small forested areas and highland bogs and streams. A number of streams, home to brown and rainbow trout, cross this moorland and cascade down the slopes in a series of waterfalls. On the eastern and western slopes, montane forest blends into bamboo and hagenia in the higher ground.
Predators are well represented at Aberdare, and there is an abundance of bird species. The accommodation at Aberdare is exceptional and advance booking is essential.
Known as the land of the safari for good reason, Kenya is an ideal African safari destination. Witness the spectacle of the Great Migration in the Masai Mara, experience spectacular game viewing in the National Parks of Meru, Samburu/Buffalo Springs/Shaba, Amboseli, Aberdare and Tsavo. Gaze in awe at the magnificent Great Rift Valley, explore the rugged Kenyan Coast and visit the bustling city of Nairobi.
The Ark overlooks the Yasabara waterhole, perhaps the largest salt-lick in the Aberdare Mountains, frequented by a variety of forest game unequalled in Africa. This tree-lodge is uniquely shaped to resemble the actual Ark, designed with decks from which numerous balconies and lounges provide superb vantage points for viewing the animals visiting the area.
