Masai Mara National Park

Arguably Kenya’s premier wildlife area, the famous Masai Mara National Reserve covers an area of 1 510 square kilometres/575 square miles, and forms the northern extension of the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. It is famous for its annual Great Migration of more than two million herbivores.

Meru National Park

To the east of Samburu and Buffalo Springs lie the Nyambeni Hills, and beyond them is Meru National Park. Covering some 1810 square kilometres / 700 miles, it was made famous by the book Born Free, detailing author Joy Adamson’s hand-rearing of orphaned lioness Elsa in the Park, and features wonderful scenic diversity.

Samburu and Surrounds

The Samburu/Buffalo Springs and Shaba National Reserves are small but scenic reserves ranging in altitude from 800 to 1230 metres/263-404feet, and have the Ewaso Nyiro River in common. It is the unique wildlife, including the gerenuk, Grevy’s zebra, beisa oryx and reticulated giraffe that attracts many visitors to this area.

Amboseli National Park

Situated due south of Nairobi, Amboseli National Park is a mere 392 square kilometres/151 square miles in size and centres on Ol Tukai, an area containing several swamps that are a magnet for wildlife. No visit to Amboseli is complete without a trip to Observation Hill for the best view of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Aberdare National Park

Aberdare National Park is a small park (767 square kilometres/296 square miles), situated 100 kilometres/62 miles north of Nairobi. Aberdare consists of the Nyandarua Mountain range, and the thickly forested hills and valleys are home to rhino, bongo antelope and black and white colobus monkeys.

Tsavo National Park

The main road from Nairobi to Mombasa splits Tsavo National Park into Tsavo East and Tsavo West. The Eastern section consists of large regions of flat, dry thorn bush, dominated by the Yatta Plateau. In contrast, the Western section is much more scenic, with a vista of volcanic mountains and hills, and outcrops with magnificent views.

Great Rift Valley

The central portion of the Great Rift Valley is raised, with the Aberdare Mountains and Mt Kenya to the east and the Mau Escarpment and Cherangani Hills to the west. The northern and southernmost sectors of the Rift are low-lying, arid and rugged, with spectacular volcanic landforms.
