NAIVASHA, GREAT RIFT VALLEY
Lake Naivasha is the second largest freshwater lake in Kenya and one of only two freshwater lakes in the Great Rift Valley, the other being Lake Baringo. Lake Naivasha is unusual in that there does not appear to be an outlet, normally a prerequisite for a freshwater lake.
ABOUT NAIVASHA
Naivasha
The birdlife at Lake Naivasha is spectacular. Some of the many species include Grey-capped Warbler, Spectacled Weaver, Brimstone Canary and Red-billed Firefinch. Being a freshwater lake, Naivasha has a healthy fish population which attracts a variety of fish-eaters. Both Long-tailed and Great Cormorants can be seen, along with Fish Eagles and Pied Kingfishers.
As well as a birdwatcher’s paradise, Lake Naivasha is only 100 kilometres/62 miles from Nairobi so is popular as a recreational destination for many of the locals.
Kenya has numerous lakes dotted around the countryside – a number of them lining the Great Rift Valley. One of these, the soda Lake Nakuru, has been voted as one of the natural wonders of the world.
At Loldia House guests can experience the life of Kenya’s early settlers, the pioneers who cleared the forests and first farmed the rich highlands. Loldia ranch was established by a family who trekked by ox-wagon from South Africa a century ago. Today their descendants still own the land. It’s an ideal spot to relax, taste the pleasures of Kenyan country life and explore the Great Rift Valley.
Kiangazi, meaning "hot and dry season", is a beautiful historic homestead set in a lush garden setting overlooking Lake Oloidien, adjacent to Lake Naivasha.
