MADAGASCAR SAFARI

Madagascar is located off the coast of Africa, and hosts numerous breathtaking beaches and magnificent coral reefs. It is the fourth largest island in the world, with a variety of climatic conditions, including both temperate and tropical weather. Madagascar is home to over 200,000 species, and eighty-five percent of the island’s animals and plants are endemic only to this country.

Antananarivo

The central highlands are very scenic. Antsirabe lies 170km (3 hours drive) south of Tana and has many interesting excursions to offer. It is therefore recommended to stay for a few days. Antsirabe is also the agricultural and industrial heart of Madagascar.

Antsiranana

The northern part of Madagascar has plenty to offer for nature lovers and those seeking a beach holiday. Nose Be is Madagascar's most well known island offering sea, sun and sand. Nosy Tankily is a marine reserve and great for snorkelling and diving. Nosy Komba is the unofficial 'sanctuary' for the endangered black lemurs. Montagne D’Ambre Reserve is one of the most popular hiking trails on the Island. Some of Madagascar’s most magnificent limestone environments can be found in the Ankarana Special Reserve.

Fianarantsoa

The climate and rainfall of the central highlands are influenced by altitude. The major rainy season usually starts at the end of November. The region of Fianarantsoa produces rice, therefore the terraced rice fields form part of the landscape.

Mahajanga

One of Madagascar’s extraordinary natural wonders (Limestone Karst) can also be seen in this region. Although limestone karst is not unique to Madagascar, it is rare to see such dramatic forms of it - an impenetrable forest of spikes and spires.

Toamasina

Although weather conditions can be a drawback, this area of Madagascar can be very rewarding for the independent traveler. Upmarket hotels in beautiful locations, and much of Madagascar’s unique flora and fauna is concentrated in these eastern rainforests. Other attractions include rugged mountain scenery with rivers tumbling down to the Indian Ocean, abundant fruit and seafood, and access to the island Nosy Boraha (Ile Sainte Marie) - one of Madagascar’s most popular beach holidays.

Tulear (Toliary)

Suggested beach resorts to visit in this area are Ifaty and Mangily. Ifaty is also very popular with birders due to its area of spiny forest where some of the most southern endemics can be seen. The Berenty Reserve is also great for lemurs, reptiles and invertebrates.
