TULEAR (TOLIARY), MADAGASCAR
A relatively modern town (1895), Toliary has rich and exciting marine life, and is great for snorkeling and diving. The beaches north and south of the town have fine white sand, and the area is opening up quickly to tourism. The town of Toliary does not have a beach itself, but does feature wondrous mangroves and mud flats.
ABOUT TULEAR (TOLIARY)
Tulear (Toliary) Ifaty is situated 29km north of Tulear. It is a popular holiday resort area with sunny beaches and endless offshore reefs. Inland, the spiny forests hold rare birds and reptiles, attracting ecotourists from around the globe. The flora includes cigar-shaped bottle baobabs, the smallest of Madagascar’s 6 endemic species. Relax on the sunny beach, explore the spiny forest, and go snorkelling or diving. Forest walks should always be done in the early morning in order to see the most wildlife.
Berenty Reserve can be reached by road (2hr drive inland from Fort Dauphin). The route passes by an Antanosy graveyard, then a slope covered with triangular palms in the transition zone and, finally through the spiny desert, with its endemic baobabs and remote Antandroy villages. Berenty also offers great birding, as well as interesting reptiles, invertebrates, and plenty of friendly lemurs. The spiny desert flora is remarkable, and there is also a dry gallery woodland. A torch is useful for observing nocturnal fauna.
Ford Dauphin (Taolagnaro) is one of the most beautifully located destinations in Madagascar. The town is built on a small peninsula, borders the sea on three sides, and is backed by high green mountains that dwindle into spiny forest to the west. Taolagnara is geared for tourism (more so than any other Malagasy mainland town) offering a variety of restaurants, nightlife, excursions and superb beaches.
Anjajavy is so remote that it enjoys its own time zone, an hour ahead of the rest of Madagascar. It is set in its own sandy bay with limestone cliffs at each end, an hour and a half by private plane from Tana.
