ABOUT MAURITIUS

ACCESS
Q: What method of transportation is recommended to reach Mauritius?
A: There are daily flights from Johannesburg, and on selected days from Cape Town & Durban (dependant on seasons).

Q: How do I get around in Mauritius?
A: Mauritius is mostly a package destination and transport to and from the airport is therefore normally included in the package.  Most resorts offer a fully inclusive package (mostly water sports).  There are optional activities that can be booked in advance or directly with the hotel.  You can also explore the island at your own leisure (car rental, day tours, scooters, bicycles, etc).

CLOTHING
Q: What should I wear?

A: Beach and casual clothes.  Some hotels might require men to wear long trousers in the evenings.  During winter months (June – September), bring something warm for cool evenings.  Mauritius has an impressive textile industry, so you might consider buying some clothes at the local market. The shops are full of ready to wear polo shirts, t-shirts, shorts, shirts, trousers, pullovers, dresses and beachwear at low prices.  Nudism and topless sunbathing are frowned upon on, and is prohibited at all hotels.

WATER SPORTS
Q:  What type of water sports are available?
A:   Depending on the resort, most offer the following:  windsurfing, pedal boats, laser sailing craft, hobiecats, kayaks, waterskiing, glass-bottom boat
*, snorkelling*, aerobics/ aqua aerobics, water polo, scuba diving/lessons **, deep-sea fishing **, catamaran cruises **
* = at scheduled times
** = additional charges for these sports

SEASONS & TEMPERATURES
Q: When is the best time to visit?

A:  Generally, the weather in Mauritius is warm and sunny ensuring year-round holiday enjoyment.  The temperature on the coastal areas varies between 22°C in winter and 34°C in summer. The sea temperature varies between 22°C and 27°C. In the central part of the island, the maximum daytime temperature varies from about 19°C in August to about 26°C in February. The western and northern regions are warmer and relatively drier than the East and the South.  The monsoon season is from December through to March/April, when showers are heavy, but clear quickly.

CURRENCY
Q:  Where can I change currency?
A:   The local currency is the Mauritian rupee. It is advisable to change some money in the airport immediately upon arrival. Foreign currency can be exchanged at all Mauritian banks and hotels, as well as at the airport.

WATER
Q: Can I drink the water?
A: The local water is relatively clean and the Mauritians drink it. It is safe to use for brushing your teeth etc, however, it is better to boil the water before drinking it. An alternative is to buy bottled water which is freely available in the local shops.
