FISH RIVER CANYON, NAMIBIA
A Fish River Canyon safari is an awe-inspiring and inspirational experience. The Fish River Canyon is the second largest in the world after the Grand Canyon – 161 kilometres / 260 miles in length, up to 27 kilometres / 44 miles in width and 550 metres / 1805 feet deep. The observation point at Hobas provides a spectacular view and, for the fit, there is a five-day 86 kilometre hike through the Canyon.
ABOUT FISH RIVER CANYON
Fish River Canyon
With water available year round and with abundant fish and game birds, the Fish River Canyon has supported humans for thousands of years. Archaeological evidence suggests that the Bushmen lived there 50 000 years ago. Modern-day visitors can descend into the heart of the Fish River Canyon to enjoy the hot springs at the little town of Ai-Ais.
The Fish River Canyon has become a popular hiking destination. However, hikes require good physical health and should only be undertaken during the cooler winter months (between May and September). A permit from Namibia Wildlife Resorts in Windhoek must be obtained. The hike is 86 km in length and takes about 5 days.
The Fish River Canyon is just one of the spectacular regions comprising Namibia. Each region is worth exploring for a variety of reasons. Click on any of the following Namibian destinations for more information: Sossusvlei, Etosha, Swakopmund, Skeleton Coast, Kaokoveld, Caprivi, Lüderitz.
