LÜDERITZ, NAMIBIA
The windswept fishing village of Lüderitz in southern Namibia started life as a picturesque German colonial town known for its diamonds and seafood. A number of fine colonial buildings, a small museum and the Old Post Office are features of the village and makes Lüderitz a facinating travel destination.

Luderitz lies between the dunes of the Namib Desert and the icy South Atlantic Ocean. Characterised by well-preserved old colonial buildings, Luderitz is enjoying something of a revival with an expanded harbour and an upmarket Waterfront Development. An interesting excursion can be made around the peninsula south of the town. The road winds past rocky bays, mud flats, beaches and small islands to Diaz Point, which provides an excellent view of Halifax Island.
There is an abundance of wildlife along this stretch of coast: offshore from Diaz Cross is a substantial seal colony, and on Halifax Island there are large numbers of cormorants and African penguins. Flocks of flamingos line the bays and small inland lakes.
