SEYCHELLES - SAFARIS, TOURS AND TRAVEL
For today’s discerning traveler seeking tranquility, diversity and the ultimate in tropical magic, Seychelles is - "as pure as it gets". Listed below are some of the most frequently asked questions about Seyechelles. Should you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact us.
ABOUT SEYCHELLES
ACCESS Q: What method of transportation is recommended to reach Seychelles? A: There are daily flights from Johannesburg, South Africa, and twice weekly from Nairobi, Kenya.
Q: How do I get around? A: A regular network of air and sea transportation operates out of Mahe and will cater for most itineraries. Package prices normally include transportation to and from the different destinations (dependant on the itinerary).
CLOTHING Q: What should I wear? A: Light clothing suitable for the warm tropical climate is recommended. Visitors should be prepared for the relatively hot, humid atmosphere. Hats, sunglasses and adequate UV protection (SPF30+) are advisable. It is important to remember that even on an overcast day, the tropical sun is still strong. Casual eveningwear (long trousers for men) together with appropriate footwear is necessary for dining out and for gaining entrance to casinos and most hotels. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended for guided walks, and trail excursions.
SEASONS & TEMPERATURES Q: When is the best time to visit Seychelles? A: The islands are blessed with a warm tropical climate year round. However, depending on particular interests, certain times of the year may be better suited.
Two opposing tradewinds generally govern the weather pattern: the north-westerly trades blow from October to March and average from 8 to 12 knots; and the brisker south-easterly trades blow from May to September with winds between 10 to 20 knots, bringing cooler and windier conditions that are ideal for sailing.
The periods of calm between the trades produce fairly warm and wind-free conditions throughout April and also in October. Superb conditions for swimming, snorkelling and especially diving occur during April/May and October/November when the water temperature sometimes reaches 29ºC and visibility is often over 30 metres.
The ‘SUBIOS Underwater Festival’, held in for May each year, showcases Seychelles’ extraordinary underwater world through a series of film shows, talks and competitions, while the 'Festival Kreol' (a week-long celebration of Creole heritage and traditions) is held in October of each year.
Several fishing competitions are also held in October.
WHY SEYCHELLES? Q: What makes Seychelles beaches different from other island destinations?
A: The beaches in Seychelles are refreshingly uncrowded and pristine. Some beaches, like the famous Anse Source d’Argent on La Digue, are framed by impressive granite rocks that appear to have been sculpted by divine hand. Other beaches simply offer sublime opportunities for relaxation on powder-soft sands under shady takamaka or palm trees, or unbeatable swimming and snorkelling in the warm, enticing waters of secluded coves and bays.
CURRENCY Q: Where can currency be exchanged? A: The local currency is the Seychelles Rupee (SCR). The Seychelles Rupee is divided into 100 cents. Coins come in 5, 10, 25 cents, and 1 and 5 Rupee denominations. Notes come in 10, 25, 50 and 100 Rupee denominations. Banking hours are generally Monday-Friday 0800hrs-1400hrs, and Saturday 0800hrs-1100hrs. All banks process travellers cheques and foreign exchange transactions. Passports are required for visitors’ transactions, and nominal commissions may be charged.
Exchanging foreign currency into Seychelles Rupees must ONLY be done at banks, authorised money dealers at the Seychelles International Airport, or with the hotel cashier.
WATER Q: Is the water safe to drink? A: Tap water meets the World Health Organization specifications and is safe to drink throughout the country. Because it is chlorinated, visitors are advised to drink bottled water, but there is no imperative to avoid soft drinks, alcoholic drinks and ice.
Bottled water is widely available in shops and hotel bars.
