The stretch of coastline comprising the Sunshine Coast is dotted with coastal villages offering magnificent beaches, lagoons, rivers and hiking trails. The Sunshine Coast culminates at the city of East London, South Africa’s only river port.
The two seaside resorts of Kenton-on-Sea and Port Alfred are considered the heart of the Sunshine Coast and the number of holiday goers descending on these towns in holiday season pay tribute to this. The small village of Kenton-on-Sea is situated on the eastern bank of the Bushmans River, with its beaches, sand dunes, shallow lagoons, sheltered coves, rock pools and nature reserve. Activities include boat trips on the river, waterskiing, angling and swimming. Port Alfred, straddling the banks of the Kowie River, is known for rare nautilus shells. Offering golfing, fishing, watersports, it has a picturesque harbour and marina, beautiful beaches and a nearby spa.
Situated in the middle of the Sunshine Coast, the city of Port Elizabeth is the gateway to the Eastern Cape, and the perfect complement to the Great Fish River, Wild Coast and Frontier Hinterland and a number of excellent malaria-free game reserves. A good value-for-money holiday base, the city offers a diverse selection of activities for families, including eco-attractions, scenic nature trails, wildlife and cultural experiences.
