LESOTHO, SOUTH AFRICA
Lesotho is a rugged country of majestic beauty and serenity. Known for its crystal- clear waters, Lesotho’s main source of income is their bottled water. The sources of two of the principal rivers in South Africa, the Orange and the Tugela, rise in the Lesotho Mountains in Swaziland. Diamonds are also found in these mountains.
ABOUT LESOTHO
Lesotho
Completely surrounded by South Africa, Lesotho is known as the Mountain Kingdom, due to the spectacular mountain forming a natural border. The country’s motto “Khotso Pula Nala” (Peace, Rain, Prosperity) depicts the local people’s attitude to life. Although not rich in material wealth, they are blessed with spiritual wealth. The people of Lesotho (called Basotho) are extremely friendly, and Sesotho is the local language.
Ruled by a King, Lesotho is a diverse combination of rapidly developing modernity and ancient culture. The country is economically dependent on South Africa, but has a small agricultural and manufacturing industry which provides employment for a select few. Maize, sorghum and wheat are grown in the low lands while the people in the mountain areas are involved in rearing animals.
The horse, introduced during the last century, is the most widely used traditional form of transport in Lesotho, especially in the rural areas.
