WHALE ROUTE, WESTERN CAPE

The stretch of coastline just north of Cape Town is known as the Whale Route as it boasts some of the best whale watching opportunities in the world. Between the months of June and November, the whales migrate up from the Antarctic and take shelter around the Cape coastline to mate and calve.

ABOUT WHALE ROUTE

Whale Route

A short drive along a stunning coastal road from Cape Town brings you to the world’s best land-based whale watching destination, in the vicinity of Hermanus. From its rocky cliffs, whales can be seen as close as 5 metres (16.4 feet). It is also the only place in the world where one can watch the whales and, by means of an underwater microphone, hear their calls at the same time.

The South African government has in fact declared Walker Bay between Hermanus and Gansbaai a whale sanctuary because it is a favourite place for females to give birth. Experience whales breaching, spy hopping, tail lobbing and simply breathing at close quarters.

In addition to visiting Cape Town, the Cape Winelands and the Garden Route, the Whale Route is a firm favourite on anyone’s itinerary – locals and visitors alike.
