PAARL, CAPE WINELANDS
Founded in 1720, Paarl was named after the large, granite rock that resembles a giant pearl on the mountain overlooking the town. The mountain and surrounding area have been proclaimed a nature reserve and a trip to the top provides spectacular panoramic views over the Paarl winelands and fertile valley below.
ABOUT PAARL
Paarl
Paarl's 12-kilometre (7.5-mile) long Main Road is the longest in the country. The buildings lining Main Road present an eclectic mix of the most superb examples of Cape-Dutch, Victorian, Edwardian and Art Deco architecture.
Paarl proudly bears the title of the third-oldest town in South Africa. Standing tall on Paarl Mountain and celebrating the birth of Afrikaans is the Afrikaans Language Monument (or Taalmonument) and just outside Paarl is Drakenstein Prison, where Nelson Mandela spent his last years of captivity and began his walk to freedom.
Other scenic towns comprising the winelands include Stellenbosch and Franschhoek to name a view. A drive through these towns and surrounding areas is highly recommended.
Situated on the slopes of the Paarl Mountain, Grande Roche comprises 35 suites equipped with air-conditioning, heating facilities, mini-bar, radio, TVs, direct dial telephone and optional fax facilities.
