STELLENBOSCH, CAPE WINELANDS
Probably the most famous of the Cape Winelands towns, the Stellenbosch winelands includes more than 20 wine estates within a 12-kilometre (7.5-mile) radius. Stellenbosch is built on history, particularly evident in its Cape Dutch architecture with fine gables and pediments.
ABOUT STELLENBOSCH
Stellenbosch
Named after the Governor of the Cape in 1679, Simon van der Stel, the beautiful town of Stellenbosch is considered the centre of the wine-growing industry. The town, ideally situated in a magnificent mountain valley, boasts a mild Mediterranean climate and is the ideal destination from which to explore the Winelands, Cape Town, the Peninsula and the many tourist attractions that the area has to offer.
Stellenbosch University (affectionately known as Maties) is a fine educational establishment and has produced many of the country's great sporting heroes. Stellenbosch offers almost every outdoor activity you could desire - from world-class sports facilities to popular mountain bike routes and six truly great golf courses.
Other scenic towns comprising the winelands include Paarl and Franschhoek to name a few. A drive through these towns and surrounding areas is highly recommended.
Meander through the quiet tree-lined streets and soak up the atmosphere of remarkably preserved Cape Dutch architecture, tempting shops and inviting pavement cafes.
