STONE TOWN, ZANZIBAR
Situated on the western coast of Zanzibar, Stone Town is regarded as an architecturally unique place with many of the historical old buildings boasting beautifully carved wooden doors. It is a place of winding alleys, bustling bazaars, mosques and grand Arab houses.
ABOUT STONE TOWN
Stone Town
Stone Town was originally a major trading station for the East African coast. The city still boasts the fascinating architecture of the many Arabs and sultans of old. The original owners competed with each other over the extravagance of their dwellings and this is reflected particularly in the brass-studded, carved, wooden doors adorning the beautiful old buildings.
Although much of Zanzibar’s history can be traced through Stone Town’s residential architecture, evidence of its cultural fusion is also found in the many other historical buildings and markets dotted around the town. The House of Wonders, the Palace Museum, Dr Livingstone’s House, Arab Fort and Marahubi Ruins to name a few.
Spend your days exploring the sights and sounds of the ‘Spice Island', including Zanzibar’s fascinating old city of Stone Town, snorkelling the coral reefs off Mnemba Island, or lazing on the pristine beaches of the East Coast.
Situated in the heart of Old Stone Town, adjacent to the former palace of the Sultans of Zanzibar, is the charming Zanzibar Palace Hotel. Here guests can experience a fusion of Arabic and Indian influences, world-class service and delightful accommodation.
