Sharing more than 98 per cent of our genetic blueprint, living in social communities of several dozen animals and possessing tremendous power and agility, is our closest relative – the chimpanzee. These amazing mammals can be found in the sprawling forest habitats of Mahale Mountains National Park – home to some of Africa’s last remaining wild chimpanzees. It is here, while on an exhilarating tracking safari, that visitors to the park can bare witness to some of the more whimsical talents of the chimps. These include ingenious tool making skills, upright walking and tree-top nest building.
Day 6 – 7: Lake Manyara National Park Enjoy a morning at leisure before your dhow cruise back to Mahale Airstrip, where you board your scheduled flight back to Arusha. Lake Manyara is excellent for flamingos and other fascinating birds in-and-around the soda lake. Due to the presence of water, Lake Manyara National Park is a birding paradise, particularly for waterfowl and migrants. With 387 different bird species recorded here, Lake Manyara Tree Lodge offers abundant birdwatching opportunities led by a specialist CC Africa safari guide. Our birding safaris take you from the beautiful soda lake where you will spot hundreds of thousands of flamingos and pelicans, to the evergreen forest inhabited by various species including the silvery-cheeked hornbill.
Day 8 - 10: Serengeti National Park After an early morning breakfast you will be chauffer driven to Manyara Airstrip, where you will board a scheduled flight to the nearest airstrip to Serengeti Under Canvas Camp. From the airstrip, a game drive will whisk you away to your campsite.
Enjoy three nights at your Serengeti Under Canvas wilderness campsite. Accommodation is in a tent, grandly furnished with ensuite double basin, w.c. and al fresco shower. Your stay is on a full board basis including scheduled activities and park fees.
Activities include game drives in the Serengeti National Park.
The annual movement of wildebeest and other grazing herbivores across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem is one of the greatest spectacles in the natural world. Originating on Tanzania’s short grass plains of the south eastern Serengeti, the dwindling of available grass and rise in salt concentration is the impetus for this primal trek. The horizon fills with 1.5 million wildebeest, 200 000 zebra, 18 000 eland and 500 000 gazelle, relentlessly tracked by Africa’s great predators. The wildebeest give birth between January and March on the short grass plains. The Migration is rarely ever the same in terms of precise timing and direction, as local weather conditions influence grass growth. The wildebeest may therefore move off the open plains earlier in some years, and remain in the northern woodlands for longer in others.
Day 11 - 12: Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area Enjoy a day at leisure until your chauffer driven transfer to the airstrip, where you will board your scheduled flight to Manyara Airstrip. Here, you will be collected by a CC Africa representative from Ngorongoro Crater Lodge for your chauffer driven transfer (1 hour and 30 minutes) to the lodge.
Enjoy two nights at Ngorongoro Crater Lodge.
